Police beats and strips driver and vandalize his vehicle because of refusal to pay bribe
The incident which occurred on Monday in Ada George area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital caused bus drivers to lead a protest against harassment by police and task force in the state.
A group of police officers ganged up against a driver, beating him, stripping him off his clothes and vandalizing his vehicle over his refusal to a pay a 100 naira bribe.
Reporting the incidence was the Driversβ welfare Chairman, Choba unit, Bestman Chile, saying that a police officer requested a bribe from Mr Emenike and he refused to pay the bribe.
“He entered Emenikeβs vehicle and told him to drive towards the police. On his way, the police officer started hitting him with a baton and fought for the control of the steering with the young man,”
“After the driver stopped the vehicle, some police officers came and started beating Emenike, stripped him naked and vandalised his vehicle. We are drivers. We canβt fight the police. Right now, the road is blocked. We will block the road like this till when the police come to pay for this damage and treat the young man.” Chike narrated.
Some bus drivers mentioned a female police officer referred to as “Mama G” for always harassing bus drivers.
